Watch on your devices

Sign in with your tofa account to see your servers, libraries, and watch progress. You need an account and access to a tofa server to watch. Account registration is currently by invite, even for apps downloaded from a store.

The web app#

The web app at app.tofa.tv works in any modern browser, desktop or phone, with nothing to install. It has the full experience and is the quickest way to start watching.

Mac, Windows, and Linux#

tofa desktop player is the app for computers, and it's in beta now. It plays far more of your library exactly as it sits on disk than a browser can, which means a better picture and less work for your server. Install it.

Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad#

Install tofa from the App Store on your iPhone or iPad. On Apple TV, search for tofa in the App Store. You no longer need TestFlight to install the released apps.

Sign in with your tofa account, or follow the on-screen steps to link your TV.

Dolby Vision and HDR on Apple TV#

For a Dolby Vision or HDR title to reach your TV in that format, the Apple TV has to switch the display into it when playback starts. It does not do that out of the box.

On the Apple TV, open Settings, Video and Audio, Match Content, and turn on both Match Dynamic Range and Match Frame Rate.

Without those the Apple TV stays in whatever format it was already set to. A Dolby Vision title still plays and Dolby Atmos still comes through, but the picture arrives as HDR10 or SDR. The Format setting further up the same screen is a different thing and does not replace them, so setting Format to Dolby Vision on its own is not enough.

Your TV's own info panel is the reliable way to see what it actually received.

Android TV#

Install tofa for Android TV from Google Play, or search for tofa in the Play Store on your Android TV or Google TV. You no longer need to join a tester group.

If you're installing from a phone or computer, use the Google account signed in on your TV and select the TV as the installation device.

If Play says "not compatible" or "no eligible devices"#

Check that you're signed in with your TV's Google account. This listing is for TVs, not phones, tablets, or watches. Phones and tablets have their own app.

Boxes Google Play won't offer the app to#

There's one case the account fix doesn't cover. Some Android TV boxes aren't certified by Google, or aren't recognised as TV devices at all. Google Play may not offer the app on those devices.

To check which case you're in, open the Play Store on the box, go to Settings, then About, and look at the device certification line. If it says Uncertified, Play will not offer you the app.

You can install it by hand instead. The download lives at get.tofa.tv/apk (direct link), and it's the same build we send to Google Play.

On a box without a browser, use the Downloader app and enter get.tofa.tv/apk. You can also transfer the APK by USB or from your phone. Android will ask you to allow installation from the app you use.

Updating a manually installed app#

Install the latest APK over the existing app to update it. Your account and settings are kept. Check what's new for new builds.

The APK and Play Store app use different signing keys. To switch to the Play Store version, uninstall the manually installed app first.

Android phones and tablets#

The Android phone and tablet app is in Google Play review. While it awaits approval, you can install the beta using the steps below. It plays your library on the go, downloads titles for offline watching, and keeps playing in a small floating window while you use other apps.

If you already joined the tester group, skip to step 2.

1. Join the tester group at groups.google.com/g/tofa-beta and choose "Join group". If the group's page then shows "Unauthorized", that's normal; the group is only used for access, there's nothing to read inside it.
2. Open play.google.com/apps/testing/com.tofa.phone and tap "Become a tester".
3. Install the app from the Play Store link shown on that page, or find tofa in the Play Store on your phone.

Use the same Google account for the tester group and your phone's Play Store.

Samsung and LG TVs#

Apps for Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) TVs are in store review and aren't available in the stores yet. For now, you can watch using an Apple TV or an Android TV or Google TV streaming device plugged into your TV.

Roku#

The Roku app is in development and close to submission for store review. It isn't available in the Roku store yet.

Kodi#

If you already run Kodi, there's a tofa add-on for it, built by someone in the community rather than by us. It puts a full tofa interface inside Kodi and plays through Kodi's own player. How to install it.

If a device can't find your server, check that the server is running (everyday commands) and that both are signed in to the same account.
