Import

Import from Plex or Jellyfin

Bring your watch history and watchlist with you, and keep them in sync while you switch.

Switching media servers shouldn't mean losing years of "where was I". tofa imports your watch history and watchlist from Plex or Jellyfin, per person, in a few minutes.

What comes over#

  • Watch history. What you've finished and where you left off, with the original watch times preserved, so Continue Watching keeps its real order instead of pretending you watched everything today.
  • Watchlist. Your Plex watchlist or Jellyfin favorites become your tofa watchlist.

Playlists and collections don't import yet. Imports are per person: each member of your household signs in to tofa and runs their own import, and it only touches their own account.

Run the import#

Open your server in the web app and go to /import (the Connect button under Settings, Connected Accounts takes you to the same place). The wizard has three steps:

  1. Connect. Pick Plex or Jellyfin. Plex signs you in through plex.tv in a popup (if your browser blocks it, the wizard shows a manual sign-in link). Jellyfin asks for your server address and your Jellyfin sign-in.
  2. Preview. tofa scans your old server and shows what it matched in your library before anything is written. The watchlist has its own toggle.
  3. Apply. Your history and watchlist land on your tofa account.

Matching works off the IDs your old server already had, so it holds up well even on older libraries. Anything tofa can't match is visible in the preview, not silently skipped.

Keep it in sync while you switch#

Most people run both servers side by side for a while. After the import, the wizard offers Keep it in sync: tofa keeps pulling new watch activity from the old server in the background, no second sign-in needed.

Manage synced accounts in Settings, Connected Accounts: pause, change how often it syncs, sync now, or unlink. Unlinking stops the sync and removes the stored sign-in; everything already imported stays.

Where your sign-in goes#

Your Plex or Jellyfin sign-in is used by your own server to talk to the old one. It is encrypted at rest, never shared, and deleted when you unlink the account. One-shot imports keep the sign-in only for the duration of the wizard.
